BRC-20 coins: are they halal?

4 BRC-20 coins screened against our 27-point Shariah methodology. Open any report for pillar scores, criterion breakdowns and purification guidance.

What is BRC-20?

BRC-20 is a token standard introduced in 2023 that enables the creation and transfer of fungible tokens directly on the Bitcoin blockchain by inscribing JSON data onto individual satoshis using the Ordinals protocol. Unlike Ethereum's ERC-20, it does not rely on smart contracts; instead, token supply, minting, and transfer functions are encoded in text inscriptions that wallets and indexers interpret off-chain to track balances. Each token deployment specifies a fixed maximum supply, mint limit per transaction, and ticker symbol, with popular examples including ORDI and SATS.

How CryptoUmmah screens BRC-20 coins

As with every category we track, coins here are screened individually against our 27-point methodology across the three core pillars — riba (interest), gharar (uncertainty), and maysir (speculation/gambling) — rather than being judged by category label alone. Two coins sharing this tag can land on very different verdicts depending on their specific tokenomics, revenue model, and governance structure. Across the 4 BRC-20 coins we've screened, the average Shariah compliance score sits at 51.6/100, with 0% classified Halal, 50% Mashbooh, and 50% Haram.
