What is Rollup?

A rollup is a layer-2 scaling protocol that executes transactions off the main blockchain, then posts compressed transaction data and cryptographic proofs or fraud-proof commitments back to the underlying layer-1 chain, which retains ultimate security and data availability. Optimistic rollups assume transactions are valid by default and allow a challenge period for fraud proofs, while zero-knowledge rollups generate validity proofs that verify correctness immediately. Rollup-native tokens typically function as governance assets, sequencer or prover staking collateral, or fee tokens within their respective networks, such as Arbitrum, Optimism, zkSync, and Starknet.

How CryptoUmmah screens Rollup coins

As with every category we track, coins here are screened individually against our 27-point methodology across the three core pillars — riba (interest), gharar (uncertainty), and maysir (speculation/gambling) — rather than being judged by category label alone. Two coins sharing this tag can land on very different verdicts depending on their specific tokenomics, revenue model, and governance structure. Across the 21 Rollup coins we've screened, the average Shariah compliance score sits at 67.2/100, with 52% classified Halal, 38% Mashbooh, and 10% Haram.
