Seigniorage coins: are they halal?

4 Seigniorage coins screened against our 27-point Shariah methodology. Open any report for pillar scores, criterion breakdowns and purification guidance.

What is Seigniorage?

Seigniorage tokens are algorithmic cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a price peg, typically to the US dollar, through automated expansion and contraction of token supply rather than through collateral backing. When price trades above the peg, the protocol mints and distributes new tokens to holders or stakers; when price falls below the peg, mechanisms such as bond tokens, share tokens, or rebasing reduce circulating supply to restore the target price. These systems often use a multi-token architecture separating the stable asset from a volatile "share" or "bond" token that absorbs price fluctuations and incentivizes arbitrage to maintain the peg.

How CryptoUmmah screens Seigniorage coins

As with every category we track, coins here are screened individually against our 27-point methodology across the three core pillars — riba (interest), gharar (uncertainty), and maysir (speculation/gambling) — rather than being judged by category label alone. Two coins sharing this tag can land on very different verdicts depending on their specific tokenomics, revenue model, and governance structure. Across the 4 Seigniorage coins we've screened, the average Shariah compliance score sits at 45.2/100, with 0% classified Halal, 25% Mashbooh, and 75% Haram.
